Plywood on Pasture 4-H Fundraiser
Oct

to Dec 31

Plywood on Pasture 4-H Fundraiser

Wish you had farm animals of your own? Want grazing cattle without all the cow patties? Support the 4-H herd by renting some one-of-a-kind lawn ornaments!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Fill out the request form below for our plywood calves, handmade by 4-Hers for this project. The cost is $15 per day or $70 per week (7 days). You can request specific dates or wait and be surprised!

  2. Wait for your time in the pasture rotation. Each cow is roughly 4 feet across. All the cattle need is a small “pasture” to graze. No water or hay necessary. Install and removal are provided.

  3. Enjoy gazing at your herd! All funds raised will support Martha’s Vineyard 4-H and the care of our 4-H cattle.

This program is being administered by the Katama Cowpokes 4-H club; please reach out to 4-H leader Carole Soule at carole@soulecoaching.com with any questions or concerns.

Canning Your Homegrown Tomatoes with Tim Wilcox

Sunday, September 14th from 1–3 PM at the Ag Hall

In this workshop we will cover two safe and easy ways to preserve your tomato harvest for use during the rest of the year. Tomato puree, aka passata, can be hot packed into jars. Whole tomatoes—blanched, peeled, and packed into jars—preserve a taste of summer during the coldest months of the year.

Tim Wilcox, founder of Kitchen Garden Farm in Sunderland, MA, will discuss the whole process, from variety selection to planting and harvest, and show the equipment needed to set up your home canning operation. This is a hands-on workshop that will show you all of the steps needed to turn your tomato glut into a well-stocked larder.

Tim has been canning his own tomatoes for personal use each summer for 25 years. At Kitchen Garden Farm he produced shelf stable value added products including hot sauce, salsa, and tomato products for sales nationwide. He currently lives in West Tisbury with his wife, Caroline Pam.

COST: $20 for Ag Society members, $25 for non-members, pre-registration required. Each attendee will walk away with one quart of tomato puree and one quart of whole tomatoes to enjoy fresh or can at home!

Garden Tour with Laura Silber

Sunday, September 14th from 10–11:15 AM

In this garden tour, gardener and seed saver Laura Silber will show how she balances food production and pollinator gardening. In addition to many heirloom tomatoes, she grows food plant varieties that are not generally available on the island, such as garlic chives, Thai basil, bitter melon, shiso, futsu squash, Korean chiles, tomatillo, ground cherry, yellow and purple pole beans, chocolate mint, and pickling cucumbers. Outside of her garden fence, Laura has converted her lawn to deer-proof perennial pollinator flowers and edible plants.

COST: FREE for Ag Society members, $10 for non-members. Pre-registration required. Sign up below and we’ll send out the address several days before the tour!

This tour is now full. Please email Lucy at programs@mvagsoc.org to be added to our waitlist and we’ll let you know if we have any cancellations!
