Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society Apprenticeship Program

The focus of our apprentice program is on educational enrichment through farm visits and group learning sessions in addition to labor. All farm apprentices are expected to split their time between two farms, the goal being to provide experiences at different farming enterprises in one growing season.

Apprentices will have the opportunity to get involved in vegetable, meat and egg production, flower and fruit cultivation and farmers market sales. In addition to the hands on activities apprentices will have weekly educational events which have previously included: farm tours to discuss specific growing techniques, farmer run educational sessions, required readings and book discussions, webinars and movies. There is also the Young Farmer Social, a mid-summer Contra Dance, the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair, and a trip to MOFGA’s Common Ground Fair.

We offer two types of apprenticeships: short and long season.

The short season apprenticeships are three to five (3-5) months in length, starting April, May or June 1st.

The long season apprenticeships run seven (7) months, from April 1st until December 1st.

Participating farms include:

North Tabor Farm
The GOOD Farm
Down Island Farm
Bakehouse Farm
Pilot Hill Farm
Cleveland Farm

Apprentices will be provided room, board and a stipend from the host farms. Basic knowledge of food safety, animal husbandry and farm systems is helpful but not necessary. More important is a willingness to work hard, stay focused and work with a sense of urgency when required.

Please contact us if you are a local farm that would like to participate in the Apprentice program.
